Construction of the “crystal” is underway
Last week, assembly of the “crystal” began. The impressive steel-glass construction will cover the 2700 m²-foyer of the World Conference Center Bonn.
The construction is composed of 28 m long beams and spans 2000 m² of the foyer column-free. The company Stahlbau Lamparter will deliver and assemble the crystal with a 500-ton lorry mounted telescopic crane. The Liebherr mobil crane has a 70 m compensator and can extend to 100 m. With an effective length of 20,36 m and a weight of 96 tons the crane with eight axes can lift up to 21,5 tonnes.
The steel construction will rest on load towers and be fixed with more than 32 bolts at each connection. After completion of the main construction, the load towers will be removed and the crystal will sink 15-20 cm because of its own weight.
Following assembly of the substructure will be the mounting and fitting of more than 600 glass panels. These panels have different sizes and can weigh upwards of 350 kg.
